Based on what we know about the early origins of yoga that go way, way back, yoga wasn't meant to be a workout.
Asanas are the physical poses we all associate yoga with now. However, "asana" actually means "seat". Originally, yoga was a centering and meditative practice that people did from a seated posture. The goal was to detach from the senses and physical worldly tethers, and reach enlightenment.
Quite the far cry from what we see in many yoga studios today.
Yoga is a beautiful, healing practice. And we're all free to take from it what suits us and to leave the rest behind. The only problem is that modern yoga studios can feel inaccessible and exclusive. It can also be risky to do yoga on your own with nothing more than an app to guide you.
This, unfortunately, leaves many people without a safe and nurturing place to explore this healing practice. I'm hoping to remove this obstacle to practicing yoga with my class offerings and community.
